The Smart Utility report analyzes India’s digital aspirations, which aim to make cities smarter and more responsive to residents. The government wants to do this in sustainable and environmentally-friendly ways.
As India moves from an agricultural economy to an urban, industrial one, making cities attractive places to live and work is vital.
An estimated 600 million people will live in India’s cities by the year 2030.
Creating urban centers that meet the government’s ambitions will depend on reliably delivering power, water and telecommunications.
The country hopes to have at least 100 cities using smart infrastructure within the next 10 years.
Smart systems will play a giant role in meeting the country’s aspirations for reducing consumption of water and energy, and increasing its reliance on renewables.
Solar power will be a big player in this transformation. Distributed rooftop generation of solar power is seeing significant investment in the country.
The government wants to put a smartphone in the hand of every citizen by 2019. Many pieces must fall into place. But the effort shows the government’s commitment to using technology to improve the lives of its people.
