Jim Lewis: At Black & Veatch, we define sustainability as meeting the needs of the present generation while improving the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Sustainability is made up of three components. First is the responsibility to do what's right for the planet. Second is making sure we provide long-term prosperity for both our professionals and our clients. Third, we're committed to sustaining the quality of life for the people in the communities where we live and work.
We talked to a few Black & Veatch professionals about each of the three components of sustainability and how they're a part of everything we do as a company.
Kaley Moe: We want to go in and we want to design efficient facilities that do not inhibit the environment or the communities where we are. In terms of the communities where we live, we want to provide value through experiences and donations to organizations within our community. The process of design and construction has a huge environmental impact, and so we have to design smart. So on our projects we start with an integrated design strategy. We also try to stay up to date on sustainable technologies to make sure that we're aware of new programs and new platforms that are coming out.
We also finally use continuing education as a way to ensure that out professionals are paying attention to sustainability, sustainable technologies, and ways that they can implement these into our projects.
Joy Desai: We at Black & Veatch always insure that whatever we design and deliver should have a sustainable approach. We have worked on a number of challenging projects with Black & Veatch, but the project that is closet to my heart is Thames Water Lot B. On a number of occasions and a number of schemes we have challenged the client's standards with significantly saved in capital expenditures and operational expenditures.
And second which is most important, is the value additions and the innovations that we did with those schemes which led us to the sustainability designs.
Lori Kelleher: The [Building a World of Difference] Foundation helps Black & Veatch make an impression globally through our focused efforts particularly in sustainability. One is through the coastal cleanup where we were able to have 800 of our professionals from 30 offices participate. We also support Engineers Without Boarders, and they have projects throughout the world. Christmas in October is another great example where we've been able to use our professionals globally in support of that philanthropy.
I believe that out responsibility is to leave the communities in better shape than when we came there to do the project. We have a great opportunity to go in a make a difference. Not only do the work that we're there for the project, but to also help out that community. Make it a better place not only for the current generation but for generations to come.
Jim Lewis: Sustainability comes naturally to a company like Black & Veatch. As builders of Critical Human Infrastructure, we have many opportunities to leave the world a better place than we found it. I'm proud to be part of an organization that ensures the actions we take today position future generations for a happy and healthy tomorrow.
